A Lutheran Who Believed God Sent Him Numbers

Cantor was a devout Lutheran with an unusual conviction: he believed God had personally communicated the transfinite numbers to him.

His framework, transfinite set theory, proved that infinite collections come in different sizes. The natural numbers form one kind of infinity. The real numbers, including all decimals, form a strictly larger one. Cantor labeled these different infinities with the Hebrew letter aleph and built an entire hierarchy from them.

What is transfinite set theory?

Before Cantor, mathematicians treated infinity as a single concept. Transfinite set theory showed that some infinite sets are provably larger than others. It gave mathematics its first rigorous framework for comparing different sizes of infinity, and today it provides the foundations on which modern mathematics is built.

The implications troubled theologians as much as they troubled mathematicians. If mathematical infinities exist, what does that mean for God's unique claim to absolute infinity?

With mathematicians hostile, Cantor turned to the Vatican.

Letters Between Halle and Rome

Pope Leo XIII had issued the encyclical Aeterni Patris in 1879, urging Catholic thinkers to engage with modern science. Cantor found in this papal openness an audience his own field denied him.

He wrote to Cardinal Johannes Franzelin, a Jesuit philosopher and papal theologian.

Franzelin initially equated Cantor's theory with pantheism. The idea that mathematical infinities could exist alongside God's unique infinite nature struck him as a direct challenge to doctrine.

Cantor persisted. He argued that his hierarchy of infinities did not diminish God but enlarged the territory of creation. He described his transfinite numbers as a "pathway to the throne of God."

Franzelin eventually accepted the theory after Cantor clarified his position.

Cantor also addressed letters and pamphlets directly to Leo XIII himself, extending his mathematical theology all the way to the papal office.
