The PFAS contamination story begins with an accident. In April 1938, a 27-year-old DuPont chemist named Roy Plunkett cut open a pressurized cylinder expecting to find tetrafluoroethylene gas. Instead, he found a white, slippery powder that refused to react with anything in his laboratory.

The Bond That Nothing Can Break

Teflon's near-indestructibility comes from a single feature: the carbon-fluorine bond, the strongest single bond carbon can form. Fluorine is the most electron-hungry element on the periodic table. When it grabs a carbon atom's electron, it holds on with an electrostatic grip that virtually no natural process can pry apart.

That quality made it irresistible. The Manhattan Project needed Teflon to line pipes carrying corrosive uranium hexafluoride at Oak Ridge. The military installed it in fuel tanks and aircraft engines.

By 1961, entrepreneur Marion Trozzolo had begun selling Teflon-coated cookware in collaboration with DuPont. His "Happy Pan" brought the chemistry of nuclear weapons manufacturing into American kitchens.

What are PFAS?

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, a family of over 14,000 synthetic chemicals built around carbon-fluorine bonds. Called "forever chemicals" because they persist indefinitely in the environment. PFAS are used in cookware, clothing, food packaging, cosmetics, and firefighting foam.

But manufacturing Teflon required shorter molecules called PFOA (also known as C8), small enough to dissolve in water and enter living tissue. By the 1960s, both DuPont and 3M had internal evidence that these processing chemicals were accumulating in workers' blood.

What DuPont Knew and When They Knew It

In 1980, two of eight pregnant employees at DuPont's C8 facility gave birth to children with birth defects, including eye and tear duct malformations. The company did not publish the finding or inform its workers.

For decades, DuPont's plant in Parkersburg, West Virginia, dumped PFOA into the Ohio River. The contamination seeped into drinking water for surrounding communities.

Environmental attorney Rob Bilott spent years fighting to expose the cover-up. As he told Veritasium: "Almost every living creature, from polar bears to birds to fish, contains these chemicals. Massive worldwide contamination, but by completely manmade chemicals that didn't exist 80 years ago."

The 2022 National Academies report examined seven perfluoroalkyl acids and linked blood concentrations above two parts per billion to high cholesterol, reduced immune response, kidney cancer, and decreased infant growth. Nearly every American carries trace amounts. Blood testing by Veritasium's Derek Muller placed him squarely at the national average.

The Whac-A-Mole Problem

In 2000, 3M voluntarily phased out PFOS, its own forever chemical and the active ingredient in Scotchgard. Under separate pressure, DuPont spun off a subsidiary called Chemours, which replaced PFOA with a shorter molecule dubbed GenX. The logic seemed straightforward: fewer carbon atoms should mean faster breakdown. (Chemours still claims GenX is safe).

The logic did not hold. GenX migrated to the same West Virginia waterways. Rat studies showed it caused the same three tumour types as PFOA: liver, testicular, and pancreatic.

It took us decades to finally address C8. They simply tweak it a bit, change the chemical name. This is Whac-A-Mole.

Bilott described the regulatory cycle bluntly: each time regulators catch up to one compound, manufacturers introduce a structural cousin and argue the burden of proof starts over. With 14,000 variants, the pattern could continue indefinitely.

Filters Exist, but Regulation Is Catching Up

Companies like Puraffinity have developed custom filtration media that can strip PFAS from industrial wastewater before it reaches the environment. Their filters achieved near-total removal in a single pass through a 10-litre vessel.

For individuals, reverse osmosis and activated carbon filters can reduce PFAS in household water. A 2022 study found that firefighters, who carry especially high PFAS levels from contaminated gear, reduced their blood concentrations by up to 30 percent through regular blood donation.

Public health physician Ned Calonge, interviewed in the Veritasium investigation video above, placed the risk in context. Quitting smoking, exercising, eating whole foods, and sleeping seven to nine hours all matter more for individual health. PFAS sits in a lower tier of personal risk.
