Carbon Dioxide Absorption

The primary cause of ocean acidification is the absorption of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) by ocean waters. When CO2 dissolves in seawater, it reacts with water to form carbonic acid. This process lowers the pH of the ocean, making it more acidic.

Industrial Activities

Burning fossil fuels for energy, deforestation, and cement production significantly increase atmospheric CO2 levels. The oceans absorb about 30% of this CO2, accelerating acidification.

Impact on Marine Life

Acidic waters can harm marine organisms, particularly those with calcium carbonate shells or skeletons, such as corals, mollusks, and some plankton species. This disruption in marine life can affect entire ecosystems and food webs.
